Some of the best things that happen in care homes are unplanned. A small idea from a child, a willingness to say yes, and suddenly something genuinely special takes root.
That is exactly what happened at Elmtree House, our residential care home in Newton-le-Willows.
The choir from St Mary's Catholic Infant Primary Academy began visiting after one of the pupils suggested it. Her great-grandmother lives at Elmtree House, and when the school formed its choir and looked for local places to perform, she put the idea forward. It was a simple suggestion that led to something far more meaningful than anyone had anticipated.
Since then, the choir has visited on several occasions, performing for residents during Christmas celebrations, Valentine's Day, and most recently at a resident's 100th birthday party. The children sang songs, brought flowers, delivered handmade cards, and shared the afternoon with someone marking a remarkable milestone. For our residents, moments like that are not just enjoyable, they are genuinely uplifting.
Mrs Samantha Birchall, Executive Headteacher at St Mary's, reflected on what the visits have meant for the pupils too: "The connection between our choir and Elmtree House has been something quite special. Our pupils have grown in confidence and compassion through every visit, and it is clear how much happiness the children bring to the residents."
That observation matters to us. Intergenerational connection, where younger and older people spend real time together, has a well-documented positive effect on wellbeing for both sides. For our residents, particularly those living with dementia, the energy and warmth that children bring can reach people in ways that are hard to replicate. For the children, spending time with older adults builds empathy and a sense of perspective that goes well beyond the classroom.
At Elmtree House, we have always believed that good care means more than meeting someone's physical needs. It means creating a home where life continues to feel full, where there are things to look forward to, and where residents remain connected to the world around them. This partnership with St Mary's is a clear example of that in practice.
Elmtree House is a small home, accommodating just 20 residents, which means every visit, every activity, and every relationship carries real weight. Our manager Vivienne and the team there work hard to ensure the home feels personal and alive, and initiatives like this are a natural extension of that approach.
We are proud of what has developed between Elmtree House and St Mary's, and we look forward to seeing the partnership continue to grow. Stories like this one are a reminder of what care at its best can look like, rooted in community, built on trust, and genuinely good for everyone involved.
